The Auvergne, a laboratory for life and land of health for centuries, now ranks at number 4 among French regions for its pharmaceutical industry. This favoured position is the result of various factors and especially:

• Research activity ranked at number 7 in France, with 5000 research scientists divided equally between the public and private sectors, i.e. 2.3% of national research worker numbers.
• The presence of international companies such as MSD-Chibret, Organon, Aventis, and Limagrain, 3rd largest plant breeding group in the world.

But this position is due, above all, to the dynamism of the Auvergne region in terms of health.

Created in 1987 following the desire of some industrialists from the Auvergne, the role of G.I.M.R.A. is to bring together the pharmaceutical companies of the Auvergne region. The founding member companies have now been joined by nearly all the pharmaceutical establishments or companies involved in health in the Auvergne region, created since this date.

Of the 29 current members, 14 did not exist twenty years ago, this situation being exceptional in France. This success and this dynamism proves, if there was any need, that the Auvergne region is a centre of excellence in terms of health and that it is perfectly possible to innovate, develop, manufacture, market, export and create jobs while remaining in the Auvergne.

G.I.M.R.A.'s ambition is to become the favoured contact for government, political and professional regulatory bodies to maintain and develop this centre of health excellence.

G.I.M.R.A. has given itself the mission of facilitating the development of health industries in the Auvergne:

• by sharing some needs,
• by facilitating the setting up of networks of competences
• by playing a leadership role in lines of development
• by favouring the growth of Health Enterprises, helping newly-created enterprises and those looking for a place to set up.

G.I.M.R.A.'s aims

G.I.M.R.A. was created in 1987 as an association under the French law of 1901 with the following 4 purposes:

1. Promote the pharmaceutical industry in the Auvergne region.
2. Maintain a close relation between the Industry and Universities (teaching and research staff and students).
3. Collaborating with the other health organisations or professions.
4. Act with the regional authorities for the defence and promotion of the profession.
